ANYONE IN IT WE KNOW?

Justin Chambers, Robin Tunney, Rory Culkin

WHAT’S IT ABOUT THEN?

Set in California, it starts in December 1968 when a series of killings start - the victims are all young courting couples in some isolated spot and the killer shoots them with ruthless efficiency. Detective Matt Parish (Chambers) is put on the case. The killer toys with the police by sending messages and calling himself "The Zodiac" and providing a coded cryptogram that he challenges them to de-cipher.

The killings continue every couple of months and Matt becomes obsessed with tracking the Zodiac down and his family life suffers as a result.

Is It Any Good? It is a well told and interesting story. In some ways the America of 1968/9 looks very similar to today and you have to remind yourself that this is set in the past and hence the police do not have any hi-tech forensic and telephonic tracking capabilities that in this day and age would probably track the killer down very quickly.

It's based on a true story (but with the characters' names and the location changed) so anyone who knows the details will know how it might end but I won't give that away here because it can be watched as a normal fictional thriller without any special awareness of the background needed. Although possibly it could be said to be unexpected if you know nothing about it.
