cast
Dame Joan Sutherland, Joan Carden, Richard Greager, Luciano Pavarotti

A trio of new releases this month under the ABC's Opera Australia banner continues the run of sterling performances that have been brought to DVD by Roadshow over the last 12 months. The performances run from the mid 1980's with a stunning revamp of La Traviata from 1987 starring Joan Carden through to Opera Australia's 50th Birthday Gala Concert from 2006 and in between a second collection of highlights from the worlds best loved Operas.

As always, the biggest names in Opera are also involved including the likes of Dame Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti, Richard Greager and Elizabeth Cannell.

MORE FAVOURITES
The second dvd of Opera Favourites brings together further selections of popular extracts recorded live and highlights the prodigious talents of Opera Australia.
Features excerpts from A Masked Ball by Verdi (featuring Richard Greager), Cosi Fan Tutte by Mozart (with Yvonne Kerry), La Traviata again by Verdi and with Pavarotti and Sutherland, Pagliacci by Leoncavallo (again featuring Pavarotti), Strauss's Die Fledermaus with Joan Sutherland, Bizet's Carmen featuring Victoria Vergara. There are also clips from The Merry Widow by Franz Lehar with Joan Sutherland, Puccini's La Boheme featuring Cheryl Barker and Christine Douglas, Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffman with more from Dame Joan & The Mikado and The Gondoliers by Gilbert and Sullivan.

50TH BIRTHDAY ROYAL GALA
Conducted by Richard Hickox, this concert featured some of opera's greatest moments from Handel through to the present day and honoured the extraordinary artists who have contributed so much to opera in this country. Special guest of honour was Dame Joan Sutherland - opera's best loved leading lady - who also celebrated a significant birthday when she turned 80 in 2006.

LA TRAVIATA
Spellbinding production of Verdi's four act La Traviata which was based on the novel La dame aux Camélias by Alexandre Dumas. Joan Carden and Richard Greager headline in a production that was recorded at the Sydney Opera House on 14 October 1987. It's a thrilling tale of star crossed lovers Violetta and Alfedo and the production is superb.

As always these Opera Australia productions are every Opera Buffs perfect night in, second only to a night at the opera itself.
