Comedy drama serial. The first of the Beiderbecke Trilogy, see also Tapes and Connection. Schoolteachers Trevor Chaplin and Jill Swinburne uncover a sinister web of corruption whilst on the trail of some jazz LP's by Bix Beiderbecke.

1. WHAT I DON’T UNDERSTAND IS THIS?  

All Trevor Chaplin wants is a set of Bix Beiderbecke records. All Jill Swinburne wants is to stand for the council as a conservation candidate. Instead they find themselves involved in a mysterious and intriguing plot that will frighten the bureaucrats to death.

2. CAN ANYBODY JOIN IN?

Jill is detained for police questioning, while Trevor chases a beautiful platinum blonde. Big Al reveals some of the secrets of his dubious empire.

3. WE CALL IT THE WHITE ECONOMY

Trevor finds the music he is looking for. Jill's election campaign builds to fever pitch - but a reign of terror threatens both of them.

5. THAT WAS A VERY FUNNY EVENING

An emotional crisis for Jill and Trevor; a policing crisis for Sergeant Hobson; a storage crisis for Big Al - and suddenly the name McAllister is on everyone's lips. Who is McAllister and what is he? Will the undeadly duo track down the villains?

WE ARE ON THE BRINK OF A NEW ERA, IF ONLY…

Jill retires from politics before the recount. Sgt Hobson marches to glory with the help of Big Al. The goodies triumph, more or less, while the baddies phone their lawyers and Trevor and Jill take to the hills in search of a happy ending. Last in the present series.
