Episode 3 of the new series of Inspector Morse prequel Endeavour airs on ITV on Sunday 22 January at 8.00pm, its called Lazaretto and in it Endeavour (played by Shaun Evans) discovers secrets, heartbreak, and a disturbing number of seemingly innocuous deaths at Cowley General hospital.
He has been assigned to protect prisoner Terence Bakewell (Alex McSweeney), criminal informant on Oxford’s notorious
Matthews gang, while Bakewell is undergoing emergency treatment. The hospital turns out to be a haunting, ghostly place for Endeavour – apparitions of love lost in the distant and not so distant past jump out at him from all corners. Desperate to keep his personal and professional life separate, Endeavour throws himself into his work.
The police are thrown into disarray when Chief Superintendent Bright (Anton Lesser) is rushed to hospital with a perforated peptic ulcer. As Bright’s condition remains touch and go, Endeavour is drawn into an unsettling mystery on the ward. Stories circulate of the ‘curse of Bed 10’ – patients on the ward who had been recuperating well but suddenly deteriorated and died. Ever a sceptic, Endeavour is initially resistant to the rumours, until an allegation of theft made against the ward by a recently deceased elderly woman draws Endeavour deeper into the ward’s troubled history.
