Game of Thrones: Winter Is Coming (HBO 17 April 2011 with Aiden Gillen)

USA | HBO

RUNNING TIME: 60 minutes | AIRDATE: Sunday 17 April 2011

WRITERS: David Benioff, D.B. Weiss | DIRECTOR: Tim Van Patten

Series: Game Of Thrones / Season 1 Episode 1

In Winter is Coming, the opening episode we are introduced to most of the main players in the world of Winterfell. When a Night’s Watch deserter is brought to justice Lord Eddard “Ned” Stark warns his people how dangerous it is outside the wall. Meanwhile when Ned learns that Jon Arryn, his former mentor, has died he also discovers that he is in line to take his role as the King’s right hand in the capital of Westeros. With the King paying him a visit there is much planning to be done to make Winterfell ready.

In Pentos though there are plans underway by Viserys Tagaryen who is determined to win back the throne even if it means forging an alliance with the nomadic Dothraki’s – warriors all.

In this opener the Winterfell and Westeros are brought to splendid life and in best HBO style no punches are pulled and if there is a chance for an actress to get her gear off then naturally she does. It’s fabulous stuff of course and bodes well for the rest of the series. It also stays remarkable faithful to the source material and in best fantasy novel style 90% of the characters have dodgy names.
