Hadleigh: Mrs Paige (ITV 27 Jul 1973, with Barbara Shelley)
In Mrs Paige Hadleigh is back at Melford, all on his lonesome. After the major fight James had with Jennifer over the family wedding back in Liverpool she has stayed on for a few days until she cools down. Meanwhile James, as chairman of the local Hospital committee, is part of a team conducting interviews for a new social worker who will be attached to the hospital. Hadleigh is shocked when one of the candidates turns out to be an old flame, Susan Paige.
Hadleigh invites her to spend the evening with him and Aunt Helen at Melford and over the course of dinner and a late night chat it soon becomes clear that all is not well with Susan.
Susan is another in the long line of women that Hadleigh seems to have proposed to over the years! His prior long bachelorhood does provide the writers opportunity to bring in women from his past.
The always excellent Barbara Shelley is Susan, she spends most of the episode either embroidering the truth or lying about her current state and is more than likely suffering a severe bout of depression. In the end she doesn’t turn up for the final interview, which James is a little relieved about.
The lovely Jennifer isn’t in this episode.
