Acclaimed actresses Francesca Annis and Samantha Bond lead an ensemble cast in the third episode of this six-part wartime drama series. The cast also includes Ruth Gemmell, Mark Bonnar, Claire Rushbrook, Mark Bazeley, Frances Grey and Ed Stoppard.
The series follows a group of inspirational women in a rural Cheshire community as the shadow of World War II casts a dark cloud over their lives. The isolated village feels a world away from the bloodshed and battlefields, but is not immune from the effects of war. As the conflict takes hold, separating the women from their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers, the characters find themselves under increasing pressure. By banding together as the Great Paxford Women’s Institute, they help to maintain the nation’s fabric in its darkest hour, and discover inner resources that will change their lives for ever.
In this week’s episode, everyone is forced to make sacrifices as war starts to impact on the village. As Pat’s (Rushbrook) marriage deteriorates, Kate (Rachel Hurd-Wood) and Jack’s (Adam Long) relationship intensifies. Adam (Bonnar) and Stanley (Chris Coghill) both have difficult decisions to make, while Claire (Daisy Badger) finally plucks up the courage to ask Spencer (Mike Noble) out. Finally, when Alison (Fenella Woolgar) resorts to desperate measures to pay a bill, she soon realises that she will have to pay a much higher price for her actions.
