Target: Hunting Parties (BBC-1 30 Sep 1977, with Roy Marsden)

Target BBC 1977

In Hunting Parties Hackett and co investigate a bizarre double murder at the home of ex-big time villain Dickie Tufnell with Tufnell himself and the crook who was trying to rob his safe both shot twice. Dickie’s brother Roland, himself something a crime kingpin is determined to get to the bottom of the matter before Hackett. It isn’t too long though before Hackett discovers links to a radical protest group who are prepared to kill to finance their operations.

If any one episode of Target sums up its excessively violent nature then it is Hunting Parties with lots of death and destruction and a final chaotic shootout in an abandoned factory. Crime big wig Roland Tufnell clearly gets more than he bargained for when he goes head to head with the terrorists only to find them armed with machine guns.

Strong stuff but very well done and there are some good guest appearances too not least from Lee Montague (who somewhat bizarrely has the dual role of brothers Richard and Roland Tufnell here even though Richard is in the episode for no more than a couple of minutes) as well as the always excellent Roy Marsden (a small but pivotal role) and Tina Heath who is best known for appearing in Lizzie Dripping and being a Blue Peter presenter. The writer of the episode David Agnew is actually a pseudonym for series creator Roger Marshall.
