Classic Sex Symbols: Raquel Welch
Film and stage actress, fitness guru or just plain “personality”: In the breast-obsession sweepstakes, Raquel Welch is the clear winner. Second husband Patrick Curtis successfully promoted her bombshell ‘tude, starting her off in Elvis Presley’s Roustabout. Succeeding movies may have had titles like Fantastic Voyage and One Million Years B.C., but their real titles might as well have been “Let’s Put Raquel in a Bikini and Get Her Wet.”
In the 1960’s she was to sex what the Monkees were to music: an overhyped gimmick with surprising staying power. Hollywood makeup legend George Masters once called Welch, “silicone from the knees up,” but in One Million B.C., the pneumatic Raquel proved she could look better in leopard skin than a leopard.
Often tagged as being a bit “difficult” in her day, she has, in later years, gone on to make fun of her she-devil image in vehicles like Naked Gun 33 1/3 and notoriously funny guest appearances on Seinfeld and Spin City.
In Her Own Words: “If you have a physical attractiveness, you don’t have to act.”
