Classic TV Moms: Roseanne Barr in Roseanne (1988-1997)
It’s gotta be strange, going through your teens with a mom who’s more sarcastic than you. Typical Roseanne dialogue: “Hey, Mom. Why are you so mean?”
“Because I hate kids, and I’m not your real mom.” Ouch!
Of course, for nine seasons–most of them pretty hilarious–Roseanne was just kidding her three kids about wanting to sell them on the black market. Heck, she loved the Sloppy Joes out of those little boogers.
But peaches don’t fall far from the tree, and these kids were a handful. Oldest daughter Becky (Lecy Goranson, later played by Sarah Chalke) eloped when she got tall enough to ride on the back of a motorcycle, while Darlene (Sara Gilbert) inherited mom’s loud mouth, acerbic wit and ill temper. And young son D.J. (Michael Fishman) was, well…sometimes your kids are disappointments, and you just have to deal with it. Oh, and Roseanne and husband Dan (John Goodman in the role he was born to play) were really, really fat.
But it was precisely because Roseanne Conner wasn’t always nice (or even nice to look at) and her kids nowhere near perfect that this working-class show worked. Finally, a TV mom who loved her kids above all else, told it like at was…and made it funny! Easy to see why it’s coming back in fact!
