Jessie Matthews: The Stars of the British Screen
Jessie Mattews was a vivacious brunette who reigned throughout the ’30s as Britain’s top musical comedy singer and dancer; at her zenith in Evergreen (1935), she also starred in There Goes the Bride, The Good Companions, Friday the 13th, It’s Love Again, First a Girl, Gangway, Sailing Along, Climbing High, Victory Wedding (which she directed), others;
She later comfortably moved into character roles in Tom Thumb, with Russ Tamblyn, and Second Star on the Right. In the 1960’s she became a radio star as the voice of Mrs Dales Diary and was awarded the O.B.E. in 1970. She published her autobiography, Over My Shoulder, in 1974. She died in 1981 aged 74.
