The Onedin Line: Other Points of the Compass (29 Oct 1971)

In Other Points of the Compass James and the Charlotte Rhodes are docked but they can’t unload the cargo of Braganza’s wine without paying 12 and a half sovereigns harbour dues – unfortunately Anne and James can only manage 1 and a half between them. Once again though it is Anne who comes up with the plan to raise the money, even if it does mean hocking the family jewelry.

Meanwhile Daniel Fogarty (currently working for Callon as first mate but keen to get his own ship) is keen to get home and back to Elizabeth as quick as possible but the men on his ship are causing problems – he proposes a competition (involving drinking paraffin!) to get them back into line. He also has competition for Elizabeth from the cocksure Albert Frazer who visits Robert Onedin on the pretext of telling Elizabeth he wants her. When Callon discovers Fogarty has hopes of marrying Elizabeth he spots a chance to get one over on James. He is already causing him trouble by flooding the dock with empty casks for James to take back to Braganza knowing that James can’t afford storage facilities at the moment.
