Poldark (BBC-1 2015, Aidan Turner, Eleanor Tomlinson)

Period drama series. When Ross Poldark returns home to Cornwall after the American war of independence he faces an uphill battle to reclaim his lands and mines and deal with the disappointment of his fiancee marrying his cousin Francis instead. His life changes for ever though when he meets the fiery Demelza.

Turned out to be one of the highlights of the year for many when it was broadcast and made a huge star of Aidan Turner in the process.

Poldark was of course previously filmed by the BBC in the 1970’s becoming a massive hit in the process and making major stars out of Robin Ellis and Angharad Rees. The series is based on the series of epic books by Winston Graham which still remain essential reading for lovers of sweeping period romantic sagas.

On 10 April 2014 the BBC revealed that Robin Ellis, who played Ross Poldark in the original BBC version, will be making an appearance in the first episode of the new version – playing Dr Halse, a clergyman who shares a carriage with Ross as he returns home to Nampara.
