Top 10 Must Watch Fantasy Movies of All Time
The world of cinema is a place for us to escape the mundanity of our everyday lives. No genre embodies that feeling quite like a great fantasy movie. Let’s take a look at the Top 10 fantasy movies of all time (in no particular order).
Willow
The idea was conceived in 1970 but the movie didn’t come to fruition until the late 1980s. It follows Warwick Davis’ Newlyn as he undertakes a prophetic quest to destroy the evil queen.
The Princess Bride
This movie is a delight, from the romance factor to the action and one-liners. It’s everything you could ever want in any movie, especially a fantasy.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Does this really count as a fantasy movie? Absolutely, this is a British classic that gives the typical fantasy movie a total makeover. As far as Arthur and the roundtable adaptions go this is right up there with the best of them. It’s wickedly funny, ridiculous, and engaging. It may have come out in 1975, but over 40 years later it’s still quoted regularly.
Harry Potter
Okay, it isn’t one movie, however, it is one story and it’s a good one. J.K. Rowling created a book series that captured the imagination of kids across the world, and from that came the movies that even adults sat up and took notice of. It’s difficult to pick a favourite one, so your best bet is to make a weekend of it.
The Wizard of Oz
It really doesn’t matter how old you are, this classic is a must. You may have skated through the years shrugging it off, but it’s time to get serious and watch this fantasy musical masterpiece.
The Witches
Anjelica Huston is everything you want her to be in this movie, unfortunately, her desire to transform the children of Britain into mice is being threatened by a young boy and his grandmother.
The Neverending Story
Join daydreaming Bastian as we embark on an adventure through his daydreams as he becomes enveloped in an exciting book.
The Dark Crystal
This dark tale stars only animatronics and puppets and introduces you to a dream like world where Jen and Kira are on a quest to restore peace to their unbalanced world.
Lord of The Rings
This Academy Award winning saga is a triumph, and no one could have believed that Peter Jackson would be able to execute the works of J.R.R. Tolkien so well. Each of the films tackles three of the books weaving an intricate story of magic and redemption over hours of storytelling.
Labyrinth
This classic flopped when it was released in 1986, however, it has gained steam over the years and is now highly regarded by fantasy film fans. Watch as Sarah dives into the Labyrinth to battle the goblin king for her baby brother. Bonus points for David Bowie.
