ALLO ALLO COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON

To celebrate the region 4 release by Roadshow Home Entertainment of the fifth season of Allo Allo we have five sets to give away.

With its international following Allo Allo had by the time of its fifth season really refined its ouvre of double entendre jokes, saucy French maid style antics and comedy of farcical proportions and the confidence of the cast and writers really shines through.

Ostensibly a send up of classic BBC world war II drama Secret Army transplanting the action from Belgium to France. Gorden Kaye plays put upon cafe owner Rene Artois whose very stressful life is full of invading Germans, resisting French and shot down English down English airmen, add to this his troubled personal life, married portly Rene is having an affair with his buxom, sexy waitress Yvette.

Every episode follows on in serial format and there is ample use of catchphrases (pretty much every character has one).  The creators of the series, Jeremy Lloyd and David Croft, came in for a fair amount of stick over their making fun of the war but they always maintained that they were poking fun at TV and Cinema's portrayal of the war and that is certainly clear when you watch the series.

Each of the different nationalities have their own cod accent and always have trouble when trying to speak in other languages, for example English agent Crabtree (Arthur Bostrom) posed as a French gendarme but always had trouble when speaking French (Good Moaning).

Incidentally this fifth series runs to a mammoth 26 episodes (spread over four discs) a huge and pretty rare undertaking for a UK sitcom but happily the show never outstays its welcome and amply repays the viewer with a bucketload of laughter.
