To
celebrate the region 2 release by ITV DVD of the Victoria Wood comedy
drama Housewife 49 we have three sets to give away.
The much-loved Victoria Wood,
the award winning writer and performer, stars in the critically
acclaimed drama Housewife 49 set for DVD release by ITV DVD on 19th
February 2007. Written by Wood, who also takes on the leading role of
Nella Last, Housewife 49 received rapturous reviews and notched up 8
million viewers when it was broadcast. This poignant Second World War
drama which also stars David Threlfall (Shameless, The Queen's Sister,
The Last Detective) and Stephanie Cole (Doc Martin, Back Home, Tenko) is
based on the real life mass observation diaries of Lancashire housewife
Nella Last.
Housewife 49 follows Nella's
struggles to come to terms with her difficult marriage, and the fact
that her beloved sons have grown up and no longer need her. The story
begins in the first strange weeks of World War II, when Nella, who is
recovering from a nervous breakdown, is persuaded by her younger son
Cliff (Christopher Harper), who is leaving to join the army, to
contribute a daily diary to Mass Observation, a government led project
charting the lives of ordinary people. |

| Nella
found the diary, which she wrote from 1939 for thirty years, as a way of
expressing all the things she could not say to her rather controlling
husband 'Daddy' (David Threlfall) and it strengthens her determination
to help the war effort in spite of his reluctance to let her leave the
house.
Nella joins the local Women's
Voluntary Service, run by Mrs Waite (Stephanie Cole - Doc Martin, Back
Home, Tenko) and Mrs Lord (Marcia Warren - The All Together, Murder In
Suburbia, Twenty Thousand Streets Under The Sky), and the companionship
and sense of purpose she finds there gives her the joy and energy that
is missing from her difficult marriage.
