| The
story goes for the classic Hood opening of Robin
of Locksley heading home from the Crusades to find his people starving
and brutalised under the tyrannical rule of the new Sheriff.
In
Robin's absence, Sir Guy of Gisborne governed Robin's lands and many
villagers, including the Scarlett family, suffered terribly: wife and
mother Jane died of starvation and Dan Scarlett lost his hand. The
Scarlett boys, Luke and Will, are bitter and scarred by the regime.
Disgusted
by this turn of events, Robin visits the old Sheriff, Edward, and his
daughter Marian, who recount the rise to power of the new Sheriff,
Vaizey. Edward advises Robin to bide his time and enact change slowly in
Nottingham. Robin listens to his old friend's advice while being
secretly delighted that his childhood sweetheart, Marian, remains
unmarried. Marian, however, makes it perfectly clear she will have
nothing to do with Robin...
On
his return to Locksley, Robin discovers that Gisborne has arrested Dan
Scarlett's sons for stealing flour. Robin rides to Nottingham to attend
the Council of Nobles – he confronts the Sheriff about the rotten
state of Nottingham and slights him in front of the whole court.
The
humiliated and furious Sheriff has no time for this peasant's hero, and
Robin quickly discovers that the only way to reason with this Sheriff is
with bow and arrow – even if it means sacrificing his title and his
lands and consigning himself to life in the forest.
Much
of the series was filmed on location in Budapest.
