GRAND DESIGNS ABROAD: Puglia, Italy

Episode 3 of 8

Beaurocracy runs riot in Italy at the best of times but when it comes to the construction industry it's like a runaway train as Leonie Whitton and David Westby discover when a third of their entire budget is taken by planning fees.

Kevin McCloud follows the couple as they attempt to build a unique artists retreat in the heart of unspoilt Puglia (one of the few regions of Italy to have so far avoided the tourist industry). The pair have purchased a derelict olive farm and plan to take on the building work themselves - all on a budget of 16,000 pounds, they do though have a generous supply of gorgeous stone lying all around their property.

Despite never having built before, the duo show amazing dedication and follow through with real attention to detail to turn their artistic vision into reality.

A later revisit to the site in 2007 caught up with Leonie and David three years later, still going strong and with their retreat complete.
