Smartly cast comedy crime drama meets the fish out of water genre in Hope Springs when a quartet of female crooks plan to start a new life in Barbados only to end up in the Scottish Highlands. Ellie is the brains behind the outfit and is bankrolling the move with three million quid stolen from her even bigger crook husband but a mix up (and the money literally going up in smoke) sees them having to go into hiding in the idyllic Scottish Highlands seeking refuge at the Hope Springs Hotel.
Filmed partly at the BBC's new Scottish drama studios in Dumbarton but also on location in Wanlockhead (in Dumfries), Hope Springs is a nice return to wonderful scenery of Scotland, a bit harder hitting than say Monarch of the Glen, the girls are crooks after all and by the second episode are busy planning more robberies. Petered out somewhat towards the end of its run, too much of the action centering around the girls plans to try and escape Hope Springs.
