Without question the two part Che (The Argentine amd Guerilla) is the best drama yet about the life of revolutionary Che Guevara, not surprising really when you know its directed by the always superb Stephen Soderburgh. Originally broadcast just after Christmas 1966 at the height of the swinging sixties and with an air of latent psychedelia by director Jonathan Miller (one quarter of the legendary Beyond the Fringe quartet - two others of whom, Peter Cook and Alan Bennett, also appear - Cook as The Mad Hatter and Bennett as Mouse). One of the all time greats of British television is the classic Minder, starring Dennis Waterman and Arthur Daley the complete first series is released on DVD this month and we have four copies of the three disc set for you to win! Although later series went more for out and out comedy this first series is very strong on drama, very Sweeney like in fact. George Cole is the ducking and diving Arthur Daley who hires petty crook and ex-boxer Terry McCann to be his "minder" to offer up some protection from the vagaries of London life. The tv institution that is classic sitcom Last of the Summer Wine never outwears its welcome and seasons 9 and 10 are released on DVD this month in a 3 disc set, we have four copies for you to win! You wouldn't think there'd be much milage in the comic misadventures of a trio of elderly (but surprisingly sprightly) best friends in the idyllic village of Holmfirth but LOTSW has been running for well over 30 years! Season 9 (which is from the mid 1980's) is a pretty important one in the series history as it saw the departure of the pedantic Foggy Dewhurst and the arrival of former headmaster and somewhat bumptious Seymour Utterthwaite (the always fab Michael Aldridge) but nothing much changes in Holmfirth. The lads have all known each other since they were teenagers and it is their easy going relationship (and the beautiful Yorkshire Dales scenery) that makes the show such a gem. Read the full story »
