SARAH SMART ON JANE HALL

1TV1 Network | August

Hailing from Birmingham Sarah’s career started out when she was a youngster starring in Woof and Chase the Fade for Nickelodeon. Sarah then went on to appear in the seventh series of Soldier, Soldier, The Bill and in Sally Wainwright’s acclaimed series At Home With The Braithwaites and Sparkhouse.

Q: Describe Jane

A: Jane is really sweet natured, naive, with a good heart. She’s very clumsy and always getting into scrapes. She is a real dreamer. She has these fantasies about the kind of person she would like to be - her Fantasy Jane who is wittier, livelier and a more confident Jane.

Q: How hard is it to play two roles – Jane and Fantasy Jane?

A:It’s a real challenge – actually I think I should be getting paid twice for it! It’s good fun because I get to play two complete opposites. Playing Jane because you know she is really ordinary and then playing her sparky Fantasy Jane.

It can be hard technically as they are always in the same scenes at the same time - I have to walk in as plain Jane and then walk behind myself and imagine that I am there and talking to myself before re-shooting as Fantasy Jane. So filming has been a bit of a mix up in my head to say the least!

I’m quite similar to Jane in a way because I didn’t leave home until really recently, but I think I had more fun because I have siblings – Jane is an only child. I can see myself as a mixture of the plain Jane and fantasy Jane.

Q:How much did you want the part?

A: I really, really wanted the part of Jane. While I was still filming Sparkhouse, Sally (Wainwright) told me she was thinking about writing a bit about her life, driving the buses, and she said she had me in mind for the character of Jane - which was just the most massive compliment.

This is the third time that I’ve worked with Sally (At Home With The Braithwaites, Sparkhouse) and we have a kind of shorthand which really helps when working. Now I really understand her beats and rhythms in the script - and the kind of thing that she is trying to get across, so I have not had to ask her so many questions!

Q: Did you ever want to be a bus driver when you were younger?

A: No I never even thought of the idea. I really admire bus drivers now and I would not want to be responsible for all those people’s lives in your hands - I think it is a bit scary and daunting. But I did get a sense of power behind the wheel.

Me, I used to fantasise about being a screen legend!
