Coronation Street was the UK's top rating show throughout much of the 1980's, one of its biggest storylines, the affair between Deidre Barlow and Mike Baldwin got so much press that plot developments were even shown on the big screen during half time at football matches. Other big events of the decade were the departure of the much loved Hilda Ogden, Bet Lynch taking over the Rovers Return, the deaths of Len Fairclough and Stan Ogden, a major fire at the Rovers and shockingly Rita Fairclough suffering at the hands of new husband Alan Bradley and not to mention the murder of show heart-throb Brian Tilsley.
