CUTTING RHYTHMS - SHAPING THE FILM EDIT by DR KAREN PEARLMAN

Published by Focal Press / Out now

Anyone even the slightest bit interested in the mechanics of film making is going to be impressed with Karen Pearlman's new book Cutting Rhythms. Released by Focal Press the book looks at the intricacies that go to putting a film together. Most people will agree that a movie is a group production, the writer and director though are usually the ones who walk off with all the plaudits. One of the key components of any film crew though is the editor for more often than not they are responsible for the end "feel" of a movie and especially it's rhythm. Something directing legend Martin Scorcese knows very well having worked with editor Thelma Schoonmaker on pretty much every movie he has made.

Dr Pearlman, who is Head of Screen Studies at the Australian Film Television and Radio School and one directors of The Physical TV Company (the guys behind the amazing Thursday's Fictions), manages to combine indepth knowledge of the business of editing with a highly understandable to the layman style. Meaning of course that Cutting Rhythms is useful as both a practical reference for editors and editors in training and as a welcome addition to the bookshelf of the movie fan who likes to know how his favourite films work.

You can find out more about the book here where you can also buy copies of the book and sample the first chapter.
