LINKSFORMULA ONE TV COVERAGE DOWN UNDER
We are big fans of Formula One here at memorabletv, it's the best soap opera this side of Dynasty. However Australian viewers are constantly short changed when it comes to television coverage of what is officially the most watched sport in the world. Channel 10, who have the broadcast rights to the series, have a curious attitude when it comes to showing the races. The Australian GP, which is traditionally the season opener, is given blanket coverage and then for the rest of the season (which runs for 9 months) it's a case of try and find it in the schedules if you can. New HD channel One is showing qualifying and the race live, all well and good if you live in one the major metro areas but anywhere else and you are subjected to a nice montage of admittedly beautiful images of the Australian coastline.
The other big, big problem is the hosting team of Greg Rust and Cam McConville, fans of formula one for sure but clearly lacking in the incisive comment department. Cam has an infuriating habit of looking at the camera every two seconds and both have a habit of stating the obvious. The one bright spot is the fact that we are given the BBC commentary feed of Martin Brundle and Jonathan Legard for the race itself. The downside to that is after each of the numerous ad breaks we get Cam and Rusty giving us the low down on what we have missed!! If Martin and Jonathan are the Button and Hamilton then Cam and Greg are surely Bordeaux and Piquet languishing at the back of the grid.
Not only are Channel 10 doing the fans of the sport a disservice they are also letting themselves down.
