MERLIN The Call of the Dragon
Season One Episode One / Broadcast Saturday 20 September 2008 @ 7.30pm on BBC1
Having been packed off by his mother to make his way in the world young Merlin finds himself in Camelot, learning that magic has been outlawed by the none too pleasant King Uther, Merlin has to keep his own burgeoning magical powers under wraps, which isn't easy, especially as within minutes of his arrival he has used his powers to save an old man from a dangerous fall. Luckily the man is Gaius, Uther's physician, who warns Merlin of the trouble he could face if news of his powers gets out.
Merlin also manages to cross swords with Uther's son Prince Arthur and is more than a little disturbed when he meets the Great Dragon who reveals his true destiny to him, keeping Arthur safe in order to safe guard the very future of Albion.
A great first episode then, with much of the exposition got out of the way early and a guest appearance for Torchwood's Eve Myles. The idea of the The Great Dragon is pretty reminiscent of both C.S. Lewis and Richard Carpenter's take on Robin of Sherwood and Herne the Hunter.

EVE MYLES as Mary Collins
JOHN HURT as the Voice of the Great Dragon
