FAILURE TO LAUNCH
Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker star in the new romantic comedy on general release now.

In Failure to Launch Matthew McConaughey plays a 35-year-old guy called Tripp whose method of getting rid of girlfriends who get too close for comfort must be unique: he takes them home. The snag is, that Tripp lives with his parents – a minor detail that he fails to tell the girl when they arrive at his imposing two-storey residence, but one that can become a real party pooper when dad bursts into Tripp’s bedroom just when they are about to get down to business. Adios, girlfriend.

Tripp – along with his two best friends, Ace (Justin Bartha) and Demo (Bradley Cooper) who also live at home – thinks he’s got it made, and he has no intention of leaving the nest. But his parents, Sue and Al (Kathy Bates and Terry Bradshaw) have other ideas. They hire an ‘interventionist’ called Paula (Sarah Jessica Parker) whose job – believe it or not – is to get stay-put guys like Tripp to want to move out of the family home by making them fall in love with her (!) The theory is sort of the reverse of what it should be – if Paula is good at her job, she should turn out to be one girl Tripp doesn’t want to take home to meet the folks.

Well, that doesn’t quite work out because, as much as Tripp likes Paula, he soon sees that warning look in her eyes and – you guessed it – he takes her home. Sue and Al are shocked to see Paula and tell her that because she’s come home with Tripp, he’s about to dump her. Paula won’t be beaten however and she turns the tables on Tripp by agreeing to stay the night – parents or not – which starts Tripp thinking he really has found the right girl for him. For Paula, this is all supposed to be strictly business, so falling in love with a client is out of the question – and what happens if Tripp finds out that everything about their big romance isn’t kosher? Trouble, as the saying goes, is brewing.

The plot occasionally detours from Tripp and Paula’s predicament and crosses over to Tripp’s friends and Paula’s deadpan roommate, Kit (Zooey Deschanel), whose biggest problem is what to do about a rowdy mockingbird that keeps her awake at night. In fact, animals play a big part in the proceedings and there’s a running joke about an accident-prone Tripp having ferocious encounters with the likes of a chipmunk, a dolphin and a lizard! But that’s another story. and that control of the bank and release of those inside can be secured in short order.
