On
stage, Lanny Morris and Vince Collins are the biggest nightclub act in
America. Lanny (Kevin Bacon) is the madcap, over-the-top funny man
who’ll do anything for a laugh. Straight man, Vince (Colin Firth)
evokes suave British charm and “cool”. Off stage, things are very
different. Sexual predator, Lanny, often has his valet, Reuben (David
Hayman) procure a member of the audience he has taken a liking to. Vince
has an ugly temper that can erupt into out-of-control violence.
Audiences don’t see the dark sides of the duo and they love them,
which is why it comes as such a shock one day in 1957 when, at the dizzy
heights of their success, Lanny and Vince break up and go their separate
ways.
Could it have had anything to do with the dead woman found in their
hotel bathtub?
Where the Truth Lies is a mystery that is told in two time frames – in
1957, at the time of the split, and 1972 when a young journalist, Karen
O’Connor (Alison Lohman) is attempting to write a book by doing some
investigative reporting into the reasons behind their break-up and the
truth about the body. Despite the fact that neither Lanny nor Vince has
ever been accused of a crime in connection with the death, it remains a
scandal that has lingered with them and one about which they do not want
to be reminded.
In her search for the answers, Alison – who has her own distant
connection with the two men – becomes involved with both of them in
different ways. As the mystery is slowly unravelled, the truth behind
the 15-year-old incident is revealed.
