Down by Law (1986, Tom Waits, John Lurie)

Down By Law

In comedy adventure Down By Law disc jockey Zack (Tom Waits) ends up in a New Orleans jail cell after a body is found in the trunk of the stolen car he was driving. A pimp named Jack (John Lurie) also gets thrown in jail and into the same cell as Zack. Soon they are joined by Roberto (Roberto Benigni), a cheerful Italian who has been arrested for murder.

The three criminals break out of jail and head into the Louisiana bayou. Tired and hungry, they separate but reunite when Benigni comes through and provides new clothes and escape routes for his surprised comrades.

Tom Waits and John Lurie, who are both talented musicians, appear in many of Jim Jarmusch’s films. The film was influenced by Robert Bresson’s 1956 film A Man Escapes.
