Dredd (2012, Karl Urban, Lena Headey)

Karl Urban stars as the brutally uncompromising anti-hero in Pete Travis’s sci-fi thriller reboot of the iconic 2000AD comic strip, from a screenplay by Alex Garland. The desolate badlands of future America are dotted with massive metropolises, none bigger than Mega City One. As with all urban jungles, crime proliferates. But anyone breaking the law in this dystopia is particularly foolhardy, as they risk crossing paths with the Judges, who are cop, judge, jury and executioner rolled into one.

The meanest of the Judges is Judge Dredd (Urban), who has been detailed to assess a new psychic recruit, Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby). Responding to reports of a multiple killing, they enter a 200-storey tower block. But the building is controlled by the psychotic sadist Ma-Ma (Lena Headey), and is the base from which she deals the drug Slo-Mo, which induces a sense of slowed reality in its users. Dredd and Anderson are soon trapped inside the monolith and immersed in an unrelenting orgy of extreme (but beautifully filmed) violence as they fight for their lives.
