In This Our Life (Warner 1942, Bette Davis, Olivia de Havilland)

in This Our Life

In In This Our Life sisters Bette Davis and Olivia de Havilland struggle over the affections of Dennis Morgan. Davis wins the contest but her conniving costs her in the end. John Huston and the flashing temperaments of the female leads give this domestic melodrama (an unusual genre for Huston) an uncharacteristic bite.

Watch for background appearances by the cast of Huston’s recently completed The Maltese Falcon in a barroom scene. Hattie McDaniel, who plays Minerva, had made history two years previously, when she became the first African American to win an Academy Award, for her role as Mammy in Gone with the Wind (1939).

Based on a novel by Ellen Glasgow.
