A Month By The Lake

In A Month By The Lake for the past 16 years the prim Miss Bentley (Vanessa Redgrave) has been spending her summer holidays by the shores of Lake Como in an elegant hillside villa. It is now the end of the 1930s and with the only other English-speaking guests being brash Americans, the lonely and bored Miss Bentley soon notices new arrival Major Wilshaw (Edward Fox). As they spend more time together, romance begins to blossom but is nipped in the bud by the arrival of flirtatious young American Miss Beaumont (Uma Thurman), who has dropped out of her Swiss finishing school and is looking for some excitement. As she begins to arouse the desire of Major Wilshaw, so Miss Bentley attracts the attention of handsome young local Vittorio (Alessandro Gassman).

Hence the stage is set for a romantic and witty story examining the vanity of men, the deviousness of women and the effect of age differences in relationships; all set in gorgeous landscapes at a fascinating time in history.
