Puberty Blues (Channel 10 2012-2014, Claudia Karvan, Ashleigh Cummings)
Based on the book by Katthy Lette and Gabrielle Carey and previously filmed in the early 1980′s Puberty Blues goes all out for a 1970′s vibe as two girls, Debbie and Sue, lose their innocence and learn a few harsh lessons about life. Meanwhile the adults that surround them also have more than a few problems.
Definitely top marks for trying and does capture that intrinsic feel of the 1970′s even as it does fall into the trap (like so much drama that tries to do period these days) of being absolutely 1970′s when in reality every decade is a hodge podge of what has gone before. It’s a veritable riot though of Farrah flicks, Dragon on the soundtrack, flares, Kingswoods, pink lemonade and skinny dippying.
The series was well enough received by public and critics alike but it coincided with some severe financial difficulties faced by Channel 10’s production department and a third series was unforthcoming.
