Thriller: Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are (ITV 1974, Peter Jeffries)

In Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are American Cathy More is travelling around Britain with her best friend Jane Howard who then goes missing, Cathy though has trouble convincing anyone that Jane even existed, the hotel she is staying in has no record of her and none of the other guests can recall even seeing her. Until, that is, the arrival of Paul Eastman who is able to prove that he saw Jane the evening before. Detective Dexter then begins to suspect that the Hotel owner, Arthur Lewis, is responsible for the disappearance of Jane.

Come Out, Come Out Wherever You Are mixes in a heavy dose of the plot from The Lady Vanishes and elements of Clemens’ own And Soon The Darkness and then turns things nicely on their head in the last 15 minutes. The whole thing is a joy from the filmed opening to the sweeping Hotel set design.

Peter Jeffries is excellent too as Detective Dexter and he has a wonderfully spiky relationship with his sergeant (“I hate you, I really do”). This was not John Carson’s first appearance in Thriller either he pops up in the episode POSSESSION and his soon to be wife Luanshya Greer co-scripted the previous episode in the series IN THE STEPS OF A DEAD MAN.
