Valentines
In 1969 The Valentines became the first Australian group to be arrested for
possession of marijuana.
The Valentines' co-lead vocalist, Vince
Lovegrove, later worked as a journalist
(on pop magazine Go-Set), a television reporter on the Nine Network's A Current
Affair, television producer (Australian Music To The World special), and band
manager (Di vinyls).
The Valentines' co-lead vocalist Bon Scott went on to achieve international success
with AC/DC.
John Paul Young
John Paul Young played the role of Annas in the stage production of Jesus Christ
Superstar for two years (1972-74).
John Paul Young's career began early in 1972 when he was discovered by producer
Simon Napier Bell who was specifically looking for a vocalist to record the
Vanda/Young and David Hemmings composition 'Pasadena'.
John Paul Young's 'Standing In The Rain' (March, 1978) which was produced by
Harry Vanda and George Young with an unusual beat, was interpreted in Europe
as being a disco song. It went on to make Top Ten in South Africa, Holland,
Germany and France, and also made an impression on the British and American
charts.
John Paul Young's biggest international hit, 'Love Is In The Air' (May, 1978), was
also written and produced by Vanda and Young.
Zoot
When the Zoot moved from hometown Adelaide to Melbourne in 1968, the band's
management gave it a bubble-gum image, centred on the slogan Think Pink,
Think Zoot'. The band dressed entirely in pink outfits. It took Zoot until 1971, just
before disbanding, to shake the image and achieve musical credibility.
In 1970, Zoot promoted the release of the single 'Hey
Pinky', by taking out an ad
in Go-Set magazine that featured a nude rear photograph of the band members.
The song was a scathing comment on the band's pink image.
Zoot's biggest hit single was a radically re-arranged hard-rock version of The
Beatles' 'Eleanor Rigby'. The single reached No. 4 on the national charts in 1971,
although it didn't achieve Gold record status until after it was reissued in 1980.
Zoot guitarist Rick Springfield went on to have major success in the U.S. in
the eighties. A
