The Sixties
The
Family Way

Film
/ 1966 / Warner Bros./ 114 min.
Dir. Roy Boulting. Beautiful,
bittersweet story of newlyweds
Hayley Mills (in her first adult
role) and Hywel Bennett (THE
BUTTERCUP CHAIN) who are unable to
consummate their marriage because
of a cancelled honeymoon and
too-close-for-comfort in-laws.
Featuring terrific supporting
performances by Hayley's real-life
father, John Mills, and the
wonderful Marjorie Rhodes. Best
known for its fine, Paul
McCartney-penned score, and for
Hayley's brief flashes of nudity
(and her scandalous off-screen
romance with director Roy Boulting,
33 years her senior!), THE FAMILY
WAY deserves to be re-discovered
as an overlooked gem of 1960's
filmmaking. And for the pleasure
of hearing McCartney's score -
gorgeously arranged and conducted
by George Martin.
