The Sixties
Steve
Aldo

Steve
Aldo was one of Liverpool's
foremost black singers. As a
teenager he had sung with the Ivy
Benson Band and occasionally
guested with Howie Casey & The
Seniors. He moved to Cardiff to
become a ladies hairdresser before
going to sea for a year. On his
return to Liverpool, he fronted
the Challengers before moving to
Germany to sing with Kingsize
Taylor & The Dominoes. After
three months with the Dominoes, he
left to join ex-Big Three
guitarist Brian Griffiths in
another short-lived venture, the
Griff Parry Five. Towards the end
of 1964, Aldo was offered a solo
deal by Decca Records. His debut,
a cover of Marvin Gaye's "Can
I Get A Witness" was credited
to Steve Aldo & The
Challengers although the outfit
that backed him on the record bore
no relation to the group he had
played with in Liverpool. There
would be just one more release,
two years later on EMI's
Parlophone label, when he covered
another of Marvin Gaye's songs
(Everybody Has to Cry).
Many
thanks to Bill Harry for allowing
the use of his photograph of Steve
Aldo.
