THE ADVENTURES OF YOUNG INDIANA JONES VOLUME TWO
Paramount / 9 Disc set / Region 4 / Released 20 March 2008
Featuring Sean Patrick Flannery, Daniel Craig, CAtherine Zeta Jones, Anthony Daniels, Christopher Lee
2008 is going to be the year of Indiana Jones, a new movie Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is due for release very soon as well as the re-release on DVD of the original trio of legendary movies and certainly not least the supremely thrilling and entertaining spin-off series The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones also gets a DVD release too.
Volume Two, which arrives in a massive 9 disc set and very groovy and in keeping packaging, is released on March 20. Most people will no doubt know that Indiana Jones was created by George Lucas after he had finished working on the original Star Wars trilogy, teaming up with Steven Spielberg they tapped into the style of a 1930's saturday morning at the flicks adventure serial to create a trio of truly exciting movies. A few years later Lucas decided to tap into the early years of explorer and adventurer Indy and came up with The Adventrures of Young Indiana Jones, one of the most fun ways to learn about the early years of the 20th century that you'll ever have.
At the start of volume two Indy is fighting in the trenches of World War One, as a member of the Belgian army, eventually getting captured by the Germans and teaming up with a certain Charles De Gaulle to make his escape. Followinug an affair with infamous spy Mata Hari, Indy's missions see him having to destroy a German artillery gun, travelling to Africa (where he meets doctor Albert Schweitzer), working with French secret service, getting into dogfights with flying ace Manfred Von Richthofen and even going under cover as a ballet dancer.
In every episode Indy meets legendary figures from history, from future Presidents of France to famous traitors and famous writers such as Franz Kafka. The stories are all feature length (there are eight in this set) and all come backed up with companion documentaries, in fact Lucas started planning these DVD releases several yuears and with his usual meticulous eye for detail he and his team (led by producer David Schneider) spent some four and a half years producing the mammoth amount of documentaries that accompany the episodes (by the time the third and final volume is released later this year there will have been 94 docos included in the sets).
The high budget tales are also filled with prominent guest stars including the likes of Daniel Craog and Catherine Zeta Jones who appear together in the episode Daredevils of the Desert (alongside Anthony Daniels who as Star Wars lovers will know was the man inside the C3PO robot outfit), other famous faces include Christopher Lee, Anne Heche and Timothy Spall. Whilst talent behind the cameras include writers such as Frank Darabont, Rosemary Anne Sisson and actress Carrie Fisher, directors include Mike Newell, Python alumni Terry Jones and the legendary Nicolas Roeg (more associated with arthouse fare than mainstream).
Being period set and high of budget means these stories haven't dated a jot and are equally as enthralling now as first time around. All hail Indy!!
Don't forget to take a look at our competition where we have five copies of this set to give away.
