AFTERSHOCK by QUINTIN JARDINE
Published by Headline May 2008
"There's bin a mudder" as a certain Scottish TV detective might say.
Quintin Jardine's serious crime squad is back with a bang in the latest Bob Skinner mystery Aftershock.
A year ago Skinner's team, Mario McGuire, Jack McGurk, Neil McIlhenney, Andy Martin et al had closed a case involving a serial killer targeting young female artists but now, when a young woman, Sugar Dean, is found dead on a local golf course, it looks like a copycat killer may be on the loose; And even though Bob is holidaying in Spain with his new love Aileen De Marco - who just happens to be Scotland's first minister (kind of up there with prime minister like powers), he still finds himself drawn into the case, especially as it progresses it looks like he well be prime suspect.
Add to this a subplot involving former member of the team Maggie Rose Steele out to track down evil businessman Drazen Boras who was responsible for the death of her husband and you have the makings of another slice of classic JArdine.
Quintin Jardine has a wonderfully laid back style, surprisingly really given how large scale and intricate his police procedurals are. They are always effortless to read though, the ensemble cast of players never trip over themselves, even with the additon of new girl Detective Inspector Becky Stallings who has joined the team from the met.
Besides the crime solving, love is in the air for most of the team, even Jack McGurk has a spring in his step after starting a new relationship (which just happens to be with the ex-wife of one of the chief suspects in the case).
A top read that fans will lap up and new readers will quickly get caught up in.
