THE CELTS EPISODE TWO

It's the second episode of what is shaping up to be a truly fascinating series on the ABC on Thursday, 13 December 2007 @ 8.35pm, in this second episode anthropologist Richard Rudgley travels to the Shetland Islands in Scotland to see Mousa Broch - it's over 2000 years old, and one of the largest and most mysterious monuments of Iron Age Britain. Richard poses the question - did Celtic migrants to Scotland build it?

The expanding Roman Empire had crushed the Celts in continental Europe - but many people in Britain and Ireland remain convinced they're descendants of the ancient Celts. The Romans never called the people of Britain ‘Celts’ - although they did say the ancient Britons spoke a similar language.

In 1984 a man's remains were found preserved in a peat bog on Lindow Common, Cheshire. He was found in a pool of water, naked except for a band of fox fur around his arm, with a blow to the head from a blunt instrument and a cut throat. Richard speaks to an expert who thinks the man was ritually sacrificed rather than murdered, and explains the reasons behind his thoughts.

Back in Scotland, Romans called their enemy the Picts - which literally means painted people. These skilful Celtic warriors were never defeated on their own soil by Roman legions. However, Richard discovers that the Picts weren't just warriors when he visits an astonishing archaeological site - a large Pictish and Christian monastery. The Picts, once classed as painted savages, were far from that. They were skilled and intelligent and embraced Christianity.

The Celts is a Granada production for Channel 4.
