DOCTOR WHO BENEATH THE SURFACE

BBC DVD / Four disc set / Released March 2008

Featuring Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison

The good Doctor has found himself battling all manner of BEM's (Bug Eyed Monsters) over the centuries, from all corners of the universe and in these three stories, sinister creatures from the deep, one of which is from the very first colour season of Dr Who.

DR WHO AND THE SILURIANS is one of Jon Pertwee's first stories, he finds himself in Derbyshire with Dr Liz Shaw at an underground research centre where they uncover an alien reptile race, The Silurians, who, having been in hibernation have now awakened to take over the world. The Silurians are your classic men in rubber suits monsters, one of the reasons they probably are not as well remembered as other classic villains. Choice extra on this is the serious doco What Lies Beneath which examines the state of Britain in the late 60's at the time the story was made.

THE SEA DEVILS teams the Doctor with his official sexiest ever assistant ever in the shape of mini-skirt wearing Jo Grant (Katy Manning) and sees him tangling with old adversary and fellow Timelord The Master who may just be behind a series of ships going missing at sea. It's another cracking story featuring prime era Pertwee. Plenty of extras too including a locations doco narrated by Geoffrey Palmer, a doco looking at the underground cave locations called Going Underground and a look at the funky almost avant garde scores used for Doctor Who in the late 1960's and early 70's.

Finally WARRIORS OF THE DEEP is a Peter Davison era story featuring Tegan and Turlough and featuring once again The Silurians who are determined to reclaim the Earth they believe is rightfully theirs. Again there are plenty of extras including audio commentaries,a doco called The Depth with input from cast and crew; They Came From Beneath The Sea which of course focuses on The Silurians and there is a vintage segment from BBC Schools featuring the always entertaining Matt Irvine, the special efffects wizard in conversation with Kjartan Poskitt.
