INDIGENOUS LITERARY DAY

Don't forget that it's Indigenous Literacy Day this Wednesday, 3 September 2008, the national even that is hoping to ease the major Indigenous literacy crisis that affects many remote rural areas, with plans to raise up to $250,000 for books and other much needed resources. Therese Rein is the patron of the event (which is a ppartnership between The Fred Hollows Foundation and the Australian Book Industry) and also getting heavily involved are celebrities and authors including the likes Sally Morgan, Libby Gleeson, Paul Jennings, Ernie Dingo and Josh Pyke.

David Gaunt, who is chairman of the ILD said ‘Indigenous Literacy Day began as an endeavour to address the woeful state of literacy in remote Indigenous communities, Raising awareness of illiteracy in these areas is critical, as many Indigenous Australians struggle to read everyday items like newspapers, medication labels and bank statements, and literacy rates in these communities have been found to be worse than in many third world countries. This year over 400 booksellers, publishers, schools, authors and libraries as well as a host of high profile celebrities will support ILD,’

Other writers and celebrities participating in ILD events in schools, libraries and bookshops around Australia include May O’Brien, Tara June Winch, Dr Anita Heiss, Alexis Wright, Kaz Cooke, Arnold Zable, Aaron Davey, Wesley Enoch and many, many more.

All Australians can help by sending a donation to The Fred Hollows Foundation or by buying a book at one of the participating bookshops.
