INSPECTOR LYNLEY MYSTERIES SERIES ONE
BBC DVD / 3 disc set / Region 4 / Released April 2008
Featuring Nathaniel Parker, Sharon Small
The teaming up of mismatched coppers always works as it adds a great dynamic to any show and thats one of the central premises behind the excellent BBC series The Inspector Lynley Mysteries, season one of which is released this month on DVD. The under rated Nathaniel Parker stars as posh, vintage Bristol driving Inspector Thomas Lynley, who, when he is not Inspectoring is the eigth Earl of Asherton. Sharon Small, meanwhile, is his take no nonsense working class Sergeant Barbara Havers. The pair team up in the pilot episode A Great Deliverance (this is included in this three disc set, it's a two part story unlike the other three stories which are feature length); It's an uneasy alliance at first but as the first season progresses they come to understand and respect each other a little more.
Based on the series of novels by Elizabeth George, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries is another high quality detective drama. A little more languid than most and with plot lines involving poisonings and the death of a playwright it's a harkening back to the golden age of detective fiction.
The quality of the guest stars is also top notch featuring as it does the likes of the brilliant Bill Nighy, the sexy Lesley Vickerage, Cherie Lunghi, Sophie Ward, Ronald Pickup, Emma Fielding, Tim Pigott-Smith, Martin Jarvis and John Sessions to name just a few.
While he is not as well known as Inspectors Frost, Morse or Barnaby, Inspector Lynley is very much a class act and his mysteries are highly watchable. His car is fantastic too!
