IT AIN'T HALF HOT MUM SEASON FIVE
BBC DVD / Region 4 / Released March 2008
Featuring Windsor Davies, Michael Bates, Melvyn Hayes, Donald Hewlett
The boys who just wanted to entertain definitely never wanted to be too close to the front line but in this fifth season of tghe world war II sitcom thats just what happens. Jimmy Perry and David Croft based the show, which details the exploits of the Royal Artillery Concert Party during the second world war out ion the Indian subcontinent, on Jimmy Perry's own wartime experience (much like they did with Dad's Army).
The party, led by the ever shouting RSM Williams (the brilliant WIndsor Davies) are charged with an entertaining the troops who are on active service, of course there being no girls in the troupe several of the boys (especially Gloria, played by Melvyn Hayes) took quite happily to wearing dresses.
Most of the episodes revolve around Windsor Davies trying to whip the boys into shape whilst the boys themselves concentrated on getting a show together. The fifth season ups the ante a little bit by moving the action from the dry heat of India to the tropical jungles of Burma where there was a very real chance of getting caught in the crossfire.
As always with this show the humour quotient is very high and the cast, all much loved, are very comfortable together by now.
Another welcome addition to the comedy shelf then.
