JUDGE JOHN DEED SERIES ONE
BBC DVD / 3 disc set / Region 4 / Released April 2008
Featuring Martin Shaw, Jenny Seagrove, DOnald Sinden, Caroline Langrishe
Martin Shaw has been one of Britain's top actors for nigh on 30 years now, in fact throughut his career we've never seen him give a duff performance (lets face it, even his Doyle in The Professionals was extremely cool) and in his latest series Judge John Deed (series one just released in a 3 disc set which includes the pilot episode and all four feature length episodes that made up the season), Shaw, with just the right amount of gravitas, plays high court Judge JOhn Deed, who with a massively passionate belief in the justice system tends to get rather too involved in the cases he is trying, even if it means treading on people's toes to make sure that justice is served.
Judge John Deed has an impeccable pedigree, being written and produced by TV legend G.F. Newman (the man behind the incredible 1970's drama Law and Order) and besides Shaw the cast also includes Jenny Seagrove, Caroline Langrishe and legend Sir Donald Sinden, he of the inimitable fruity voice.
Over the course of the five episodes Deed has to deal with racial tensions, an MI5 informer accused of being a wife beater, a business man pulling strings to avoid a manslaughter charge, a rapist out for revenge and a young female doctor accused of murdering an elderly patient in her care.
Judge John Deed is a cut above your average tec show and is certainly worth seeking out.
