THE LAST DETECTIVE SERIES FOUR
Acorn Media / Region 1 / Released 8 April 2008
Featuring Peter Davison, Sean Hughes, Emma Amos
Leslie Thomas, the excellent comedy fiction writer, actually only wrote three Dangerous Davies, The Last Detective novels but this series, which takes the novels as its starting off point, has quite easily surpassed them running for some 4 seasons. Peter Davison is Detective Davies, better known as Dangerous to his fellow police colleagues because of his habit of being clumsy and the last person you'd call on to solve a real crime, or so they think because ove the course of the series, Dangerous approves himself to be a dab hand at mystery solving - often helped (or hindered) by his best friend Irish philospher Mod Davies (Sean Hughes).
When the series began Davies was seperated from his wife Julie (played by Emma Amos) but they did share custody of their dog by the time of this fourth season (5 episodes in a 2 volume set) their relationship has improved enough for them to move back in together - Julie is less sure about having Mod live with them as well!
What makes The Last Detective especially enjoyable is how laid back the whole series, yes there is a mystery of the week but it never quite seems the centre of the series, there is also a high level of guest stars too with this fourth season featuring the likes of Roger Daltrey (the Who frontman), Leslie "Ding Dong" Phillips and Kenneth Cranham.
Another high quality series that Acorn are bringing to US audiences for the first time The Last Detective is a quirky and entertaining mystery drama series.
