THE LAST OF THE SUMMER WINE COMPLETE SERIES THREE AND FOUR

BBC DVD / 3 disc set / Region 4 / Released March 2008

Featuring Peter Sallis, Bill Owen, Brian Wilde

Not many TV shows last for 30 years, but one such legendary sitcom has - Last of the Summer Wine! BBC DVD are released this wonderful series from the beginning and this month comes series three and four in a 3 disc collection. LOTSW is also one of the few shows to feature the elderly in the lead roles, created by the always whimsical Roy Clarke the show, especially in is earliest years, followed the (mis)fortunes of a trio of elderly gents having fun in the Yorkshire Pennines, now retired the trio have almost reverted back to the nostalgic years of their childhood where adventure is the order of the day.

Norman Clegg (Peter Sallis) is the hang on a minute, should we be doing this, member of the group whilst Compo (Bill Owen) is the scruffy, devil may care, risk taker. Foggy Dewhurst (Brian Wilde) is a new member of the trio from series three onwards and is the ex-army, I'm in charge, figure who more often than not comes up with the plan that sees Comp up to his neck in it. The first two series had seen Michael Bates playing Blamire, the third member of the group but ill health had forced him out of not just this series but also It Ain't Half Hot Mum which he was also starring in at the time. This trio though, Compo, Clegg and Foggy is considered by pretty much everyone to be the definitive team and most of the shows golden years and episodes belong to these three.

Like a John Betjeman poem brought to life, the aching nostalgia of a return to the endless days of summer youthfulness is really what lies at the heart of Last of the Summer Wine and watching these quintessential episodes again is guaranteed to put a smile on your face but also have you hankering for a more simpler time yourself.
