MIDSOMER MURDERS The Early Cases
Acorn Media / 19 disc set! / Region 1 / Released 25 March 2008
Featuring John Nettles, Daniel Casey
Seldom do DVD sets of this quality come along, acorn's new 19 disc set featuring the best of the early cases of Midsomer Murders is a joy to behold. Wonderfully packaged in a "book" style casing, the Early cases is a great example of the DVD box set as collectable.
Available for the time in the US in their original UK production order The Early CAses features the first 18 stories from the series, the first five of which were based on novels by series creator Caroline Graham.
Midsomer Murders is actuallyt one of the most popular series in the world, seen in over 200 different territories and its easy to see why as it fulfills our seemingly insatiable appetite for murder mysteries as well as providing a beautiful picture postcard view of an England that surely is how we think it should be, all village greens and duck ponds, almost like The Kinks classic Village Green Preservation Society come to life.
The series of course follows detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby and Sgt Gavin Troy as they investigate murders in the idyllic but crime ridden villages in the county of Midsomer where it seems murder is never far away.
John Nettles is superb as Barnaby, unflapabble and for a change in TV copdom a happily married family man with a grown up daughter and Daniel Casey is his right hand, aide de camp, young and naive at series start he matures nicely as the series progresses.
The show has always managed to attract a high level of guest stars and well known faces in this set include Emily Mortimer, Orlando Bloom, Anna Massey, Prunella Scales and Richard Briers to name just a few. MM is ashow to cherish, the tv equivalent of a classic Agatha Christie novel and this STUNNING set definitely deserves to be tagged as essential.
Main extra is a bonus disc featuring a 50 minutue doco called Super Sleuths and featuring contributions from cast and key writers as well as Caroline Graham, there is also a Midsomer Map, production notes, a biog of Caroline Graham, cast filmographies, a behind the scenes featurette and a fun essay by John Nettles.
