SHATTER by MICHAEL ROBOTHAM
Published by Sphere
The psychological thriller is a genre thats ruled by Americans such as Harlan Coben and Robert Crais but we can add a new English/Australian voice to the pot with the continued rise of Michael Robotham whose latest novel, Shatter, has just been released by Sphere.
Clinical psychologist Joe O'Loughlin, who has had cameos in other Robotham novels and the lead in Suspect, is called to the scene of a wannabe suicide, a woman about to jump off Bristol's Clifton Suspension Bridge, he tries to talk her down but fails. When a second suicide (involving a woman with close links to the first) O'Loughlin becomes convinced that a controlling hand is behind the deaths and when it becomes clear that a pattern is being folowed O'Loughlin and the police face a race against time to prevent further deaths.
O'Loughlin's a great lead character, struggling with the onset of Parkinsons, he is certainly not a maverick in the classic mould, which makes for a very refreshing change, of course there is a role too for Robotham favourite Vincent Ruiz, now in retirement but still able to pull a few strings to help Joe.
With a genuine air of creeping menace, Shatter is fast paced, sometimes scary and with an overall melancholic vibe that puts it a notch above similar fare.
Recommended.
