THE MAFIA
ABC DVD / Region 4 / Released April 2008
Since the days of The Godfather the Mafia
have always been seen as this seemingly huge homegenous entity, a scary thought to most people but few people, we'd guess, know the origins of the Mafia but this four part documentary, released this month, goes a long way towards explaing its complex and multi layered history.
Beginning in the late 1950's the scicilian Mafia began to make use of the new scope for international travel and began to spread out, New York was the obvious starting place, it already had a massive Italian prescence and soon its tentacles were everywhere, building up a massive drug importing and money laundering business.
Before too long the Sicilian Mafia clans were incredibly wealthy beyond their wildest dreams - of course once the other criminal and Mafia gangs saw the wealth being created they decided they wanted a piece of the action too which was the cue for major "wars" between the clans as they fought for control.
This is a massively detailed doco, with contributions from many key members of the clans as well as the police charged with bringing them down. For anyone interested in looking beyond the Godfather overtones then this is essential viewing.
