THE ONEDIN LINE SEASON TWO
BBC DVD / Region 4 / Released April 2008
Featuring Anne Stallybrass, Howard Lang, Jane Seymour
Possibly the most loved of all the BBC's classic period drama series from the 1970's, The Onedin Line made a major star of Peter Gilmore who played the sea faring Captain James Onedin and ran for pretty much the whole of the seventies.
Season two has just been released in a handsomely digipacked 4 disc set and picks up the story in the 1870's (the show was set in the 1860's in season one); The series had started with James winning command of his own three masted schooner The Charlotte Rhodes from the penniless Captain Webster, however in return he has to marry Webster's daughter Anne (played by Anne Stallybrass), of course Anne has some very strong ideas on how James should run his business.
Season two sees a new major shareholder in The Onedin Line in the shape of Emma Callon (a young Jane Seymour), neice of Albert who had initially given James his start in the business; Whilst James is away in the West Indies Emma finds herself relying on newcomer (and James' chief rival) Daniel Fogarty (Michael Billington) who is also out to thwart James' plans to build a steamship.
Full of stirring scenes both in the UK and the Caribbean, the Onedin Line is also a high quality drama that very quickly pulls you in and here is this second season is absolutely in its prime and should be top of the viewing list for any fan of classic British telly.
